Tips on Boating with Children

Summer is finally in the air and families are eager to plan family outings on the boat.

Boating with children can be a lot of fun, but it’s so important to stay safe and be prepared.

Life Jackets

Life jackets are an absolute must when it comes to boating safety, for children and adults. If your kids are young or they are not strong swimmers, make sure they wear one from the moment they step on the dock. Make sure you choose bright colors that might be more appealing to children. Plus, you should make sure that the jacket is the right size or it won’t work properly.

Swimming Lessons

If you are a family that spends a lot of time on the water, it’s important that your children feel confide around the water. If you want to prepare your children to have a safe summer on the boat, consider signing them up for swimming lessons. In the event that an emergency does occur, children will feel confident in their ability to swim.

Safety Zone

It is important that kids understand that when the boat is in motion, they should be seated in a designated area. Keep an eye on children, especially as the speed of the boat changes. If you’re having a hard time getting children to keep still consider keeping small toys that require minimal movement on the boat to keep them busy.

Pack Snacks

You’ll be spending lots of time in the sun, and constant sun exposure can be draining especially for young children. Even after an hour or so, children start to get exhausted from sunshine. Keep plenty of fluids, water especially, to help children remain hydrated. It’s also a good idea to keep healthy snacks on hand such as fruit snacks, granola bars, and other energy boosters.

Sun Protection

Of course, our number one tip is to practice appropriate sun protection.  You should never skimp on the sunscreen, and remember to reapply often. Boats will expose you to sunshine for hours at a time and it’s vital that your children are protected from sunburns, sun poisoning, and long-term damages.
