Preparing Your Boat for Summer

Preparing Your Boat for Summer

Summer boating fun is almost here! Late spring is the ideal time to prep your beauty for the upcoming season. The general rule of thumb is to prep your boat before Memorial Day, which often marks the first summer party of the year. Follow our guide below to get everything fun, safe, and ready for daylong fishing and boating adventures with friends and family.

Summer Boating Checklist

As with anything, organization is key. Create a checklist and a service log to maintain a steady flow of information about your process.  Your boat should come with a manufacturer’s service manual – make sure you actually read it. There’s a ton of useful information in this book that can prevent any unwarranted problems while you’re out on the boat having fun. We’ve provided an example checklist below for you to use as a guide, be sure to edit this according to your specific boating or family needs.

Basic Cleaning

Do an overall cleaning of the boat. Start by cleansing the hull, deck, and topsides with a non-abrasive cleaning agent. Afterwards, clean the windows and hatches, and check to ensure all drains are clear. Clean the canvas or Bimini top, and check the wiper blades.

Polishing the BoatPreparing Your Boat for Summer

Polish all metal and add a nice coat of wax to the boat for a finalized look. While you’re doing this, you can check for abrasions, dents, or scratches thoroughly. This is the time to schedule any touch-up jobs or repairs.

Paperwork

Ensure your boat registration is current. You’ll also want to attend a boater safety course if you have never driven a boat, or if it’s been a long time since you last did. Read through your most recent service and make sure there’s no overdue maintenance.

Once you have the boat ready, it’s time to prep your boaters. Whether you plan to take your family or friends, it’s important to discuss and review boating safety. Use our guide below to make your own set of boat rules for your passengers.
