Sun on the Water: Staying Safe from UV Rays

As we approach spring and summer, the thought of boating, swimming and fun in the water sounds more tempting. Imagine zipping along the bay in a speedboat, the wind blowing through your hair as you’re cooled off by refreshing water droplets and basking in the warm sun. But wait: Have you put on sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays? Before you get to relaxing, make sure that you’ve taken steps to keep your skin protected from the harsh light of the sun.

Sun Safety Wear Sunscreen

What if you only have an open boat? In that case, it’s all the more important to keep a close watch on your sunscreen. When in the sun, you should apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher every two hours. You also want to first apply your sunscreen 15 minutes to a half hour before venturing into the sun, as well.

Glasses and Apparel

Sunglasses and proper clothing can make the difference between having a fun day at the beach and having serious sunburn. When you burn your skin, not only do showers and getting dressed become excruciating, but you can be doing serious damage to your skin that could even lead to skin cancer. Covering up keeps you protected and can help prevent the sun from giving you an unhealthy glow.

Polarized sunglasses are also a good option while out in the sun. These glasses protect your eyes from UV rays and sun damage. Plus, polarized lenses allow you to see into the water more clearly which can be handy if coming up on a rocky shoal or looking for schools of fish.

Shade Protection

The sun’s rays are the most intense between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day. If you’ll be out on your boat, it is important to find time to spend in the shade. When you are out on the water, it is hard to escape the blistering sun, unless you are prepared. Bimini tops are simple and affordable and can provide much needed shade for you and your friends. The more prepared you are to venture into the sun, the more you can relax and not have to worry about coming home looking like a freshly cooked lobster.
