There are few things better than taking your boat out on a sun-filled day, but keeping your boat looking its best will always be a challenge. Since boats spend their time in the water, they are subject to more factors that can harm their appearance. This is especially true when it comes to a boat’s upholstery.
Keeping the upholstery on your vessel clean is a difficult task that takes lots of knowledge and attentive care. Clean upholstery, though, will really give your boat that fresh look and make it all the more comfortable during your days on the water. Spending the extra time and care to maintain your boat’s vinyl-upholstered surfaces will help your boat looking as new as the day you bought it.
Here’s a few things to keep in mind to help your boat’s upholstery looking its best:
Keep Mildew and Mold Off
There are a number of harsh chemicals that can remove mold and mildew, but in all honesty, they aren’t needed. Combine hydrogen peroxide and warm water with a one-to-one radio. Spray the solution onto the upholstery and let sit for a minute. Give it a quick scrub and any mildew and mold growth should come off.
Use a Soap and Soda Mixture
Another great trick is to use a mix of Castille soap and washing soda. Use half a teaspoon of Castille soap, half a teaspoon of washing soda, two cups of water and 15 to 20 drops of tea tree oil. This is an all-purpose cleaner that will work on any common vinyl boat surface.
Use a Vinyl Protectant
Using a protectant is like waxing your car – it helps keep your seats looking fresh, clean and new, and will protect vinyl from discoloration, drying and cracking. A good protectant can ensure that your upholstery stays looking its best. There are many options on the market today, so be sure to follow the directions of the protectant you buy to make sure that you apply the correct amount and reapply in intervals as needed.
Is it too late for your seats, and you’re looking to refresh your boat’s upholstered seating entirely? No problem. Seating is among the many great marine accessories and supplies that we carry at Triangle Marine Center. We can help you refresh your look and keep you comfortable when on the water.
