Boats and Horsepower: How HP Translates to the Water

When most people hear the word “horsepower,” they associate it with cars and think about how horsepower plays a key role in how fast they can go. In general, the higher the horsepower a car has, the more power it will have and the faster it will be able to drive.

Horsepower is something that boat owners and those looking to purchase a boat need to consider, too. It will impact everything from how many passengers a boat can hold at any given time to whether or not it will be able to safely tow items or people. It will also determine the top speed of a boat, particularly important to those with speed boats.

Boats and HorsepowerBefore you pick out a motor for your boat, you should take the time to consider what you will be using the boat for. If you have a rigid inflatable boat or even a smaller aluminum boat, you might only need a motor that delivers between 40 and 100 horsepower. A motor that size won’t necessarily allow you to drive your boat very fast, but it should provide more than enough power to get you and your passengers where you’re going.

For slightly larger aluminum fishing boats, an engine in the 115 to 150 horsepower range should do the trick, says Allstate’s blog. This will allow you to transport several people easily without putting a major strain on your motor. There are also engines that have a much higher horsepower – think 250 or 300 HP – but unless you plan on driving your boat faster than 50 miles per hour on a regular basis, you probably don’t need something that large. Those motors are also ideal for very large boats that have more weight to them.

The key to picking out a motor for a boat is finding one that meets your specific needs. If you select one that’s too large, it will provide more power than you actually need and could impact you negatively out on the water. On the other hand, if you select one that’s not large enough, you won’t get the experience you are looking for when you’re out on the waves.
