There is a lot of maintenance that you will need to do if you own a boat, and one of the most important things that needs to be done regularly is familiar to any car owner as well – changing your oil and oil filter.
Like any other vehicle, a boat relies on oil to keep it running efficiently, so you should get into the habit of changing the oil in your boat on a regular basis. By doing this, you will keep your boat running for significantly longer and you will avoid doing damage to the engine of possibly other parts of the boat.
When it comes to cars, most manufacturers recommend that you change your oil routinely. The recommendation has changed in more recent years, and modern engines typically need a chance of oil every 5,000 to 10,000 miles. This isn’t how it works with boats. If you own a boat, you should be prepared to change your oil and your oil filter roughly once for every 50 to 100 hours of operation, depending on what type of engine you have. The owner’s manual that came along with your boat should tell you exactly how often the oil and oil filter need to be changed for your engine.
It also is often a good idea try to change your oil more frequently with a newer engine. Since these motors are still getting their first exposure to use and lubrication, changing the oil once every 20 hours until it’s seen about 100 hours of total use is a smart idea. You can then increase the number of hours between changes once the boat’s engine gets a little bit older, since older motors typically don’t need oil changes as frequently as new ones. As long as you do routine oil changes, though, you shouldn’t run into any problems related to the oil or your oil filter.
